A paved road runs through the Soğanlı Valley (Soğanlı Dere), which is south of the city of Ürgüp. Rock-carved structures can be found on both sides of the valley. Recent scholarship has emphasized the relationship of rock-cut churches with residential architecture and burials in this area.
